Japan’s Bioeconomy Strategy (2024)

The Bioeconomy Strategy formulated in 2019 was updated at the Integrated Innovation Strategy Promotion Council held on June 3, 2024. In this strategy, in order to contribute to both sustainable economic growth and solving various problems, the following five market areas were identified:

(1) Biomanufacturing / bio-derived products

(2) Sustainable primary production systems

(3) Large-scale buildings utilizing wood and smart forestry

(4) Industries related to biopharmaceuticals, regenerative medicine, and cell and gene therapies

(5) Lifestyle improvement healthcare and digital health

The goal is to create a 100 trillion yen market in Japan and overseas by 2030.

For each market, the plan sets out a vision for 2030 and provides directions for accelerating technological development, improving market and business environments, etc. In addition, the strategy also addresses fundamental measures such as strengthening research capabilities in basic life sciences, which will be the source for the expansion of the bioeconomy, promoting the “biocommunity” initiative to network bases in each region and attract human resources and investment from Japan and overseas, and developing data infrastructure for the fusion of bio and digital.

The Secretariat of the Cabinet Office for Science, Technology and Innovation Promotion will serve as the control tower for this strategy, and related ministries and agencies will work together to promote it. The plan aims to make the most of Japan’s strengths and realize a world-leading bioeconomy society.
